Telecoms subscribers in the country have expressed excitement at the dawn of a new era as Mobile Number Portability commences today. MNP allows mobile subscribers to move from one network to another without changing their numbers. Having patiently waited for it for years, some of the subscribers, who spoke with our correspondents on Sunday, said it would mark a new era in telecoms service offerings in the country. The Chief Executive Officer, Royale Prestige Properties, Mr. Seun Akinyele, said it was a welcome idea, adding that he would not have to be helplessly locked onto any network just for the fear of losing the number that had been identified with him. It’s been 3 years since Olaitan Olanipekun Oladapo popularly known as Da’Grin died. It was a big shock to fans and family of the later rapper when the news of his death broke. The rapper had an accident in the late hours of the night on his way back from the studio and was pronounced dead at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) in April 2010. Years after spending millions of Naira on campaigns and migration of the nation’s currency from paper prints to polymer notes, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced that it is ready to stop the printing of small denomination naira in polymer notes. The deputy governor, banking supervision, Tunde Lemo, in a statement on Sunday said the apex bank decided to scrap the polymer notes because they fade easily, despite earlier experiments which showed that the notes could last longer than paper notes. Mr Lemo adds that no new polymer note is being printed at the moment and the CBN will begin to produce the second generation of lower denomination notes sometime between June and July this year. The CBN deputy governor also appealed to Nigerians to be more careful in handling the naira notes, stressing that its campaign against the abuse of the currency has not been successful. Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria (SCSN) President Datti Ahmed yesterday declined to serve on the 26-member committee to dialogue with Boko Haram. Activist Shehu Sani turned down his membership on Wednesday. Dr. Ahmed said the bitter experience he had with the Federal Government in trying to broker peace with members of the sect informed his decision to opt out of the Presidential Committee on North’s Security. He told the Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) monitored in Kaduna that the government should be held responsible for the breakdown of earlier peace talks.
