The challenge of lung cancer November marks lung cancer awareness month. Lung cancer is a leading cause for cancer deaths in the world and is strongly correlated with smoking. Although the rates of lung cancer in sub-Saharan Africa is lower vs. the rest of the world, it is still important to discuss especially as the rates of tobacco use in Africa is on the rise - if the smoking rate continues to climb, dealing with tobacco-related illnesses such as lung cancer will become more common. Furthermore, secondhand smoke causes lung cancer in people who have never smoked themselves. Symptoms Lung cancer may not produce any noticeable symptoms in the early stages. In many people diagnosed with lung cancer, diagnosis is made after the disease has advanced. As many of these symptoms are general, many people don't suspect lung cancer. And by the time they see a doctor, often the cancer has already started to spread. Risk factors While the causes of lung cancer are not fully understood, there are a number of factors associated with the risk of developing the disease. These factors include: Tobacco smoking Environmental factors such as passive smoking, radon exposure and occupational exposures, such as asbestos and diesel exhaust A family history of lung cancer Previous lung diseases such as lung fibrosis, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and pulmonary tuberculosis.
