Health: Scientists On Brink Of HIV Cure

Danish scientists are expecting results that will show that “finding a mass-distributable and affordable cure to HIV is possible”.  They are conducting clinical trials to test a “novel strategy” in which the HIV virus is stripped from human DNA and destroyed permanently by the immune system. The move would represent a dramatic step forward in the attempt to find a cure for the virus, which causes Aids. The scientists are currently conducting human trials on their treatment, in the hope of proving that it is effective. It has already been found to work in laboratory tests.  The technique involves releasing the HIV virus from “reservoirs” it forms in DNA cells, bringing it to the surface of the cells. Once it comes to the surface, the body’s natural immune system can kill the virus through being boosted by a “vaccine”. In vitro studies — those that use human cells in a laboratory — of the new technique proved so successful that in January, the Danish Research Council awarded the tea

The case was entitled, Federal Government of Nigeria(FRN) v Esai Dangabar and 5 others. Mr. Soji Oye, acting Director of Information at the NJC, communicated Justice Mukhtar’s decision. South Africa gets its first Pornographic TV Channels

South Africa’s broadcasting regulator has granted a local satellite television service permission to air the country’s first pornography channels, amid resistance from religious and community groups, a statement said Wednesday. The Independent Communications Authority (ICASA) ruled that “there is no law of general application prohibiting the production and distribution of adult content” by TopTV. The three channels, “Playboy TV,” “Desire TV” and “Private Spice” will be broadcast between 8pm and 5am. According to the watchdog, objections were brought by several groups “based on moral grounds, rather than a research evidence to demonstrate some of the conclusive remarks linking pornography and gender-based violence.” The channels were meant to go on air early last year, but the move was blocked by the Johannesburg High Court, which referred the case to the regulator. ICASA initially dismissed the application, arguing that adult content would infringe on women’s right to dig

Jonathan awards $40million contract to Israeli company to monitor computer, Internet communication by Nigerians - Premium Times

Here is a very important information from  PREMIUM TIMES  for the 47 million Nigerian Internet users. Big Brother, in the form of the Jonathan administration, is watching you, and your communication is no longer safe. It is one of the most far-reaching policies ever designed in Nigeria’s history to invade the privacy of citizens. The  Jonathan administration  secretly, and in open violation of lawful contracting procedures, has awarded an Israeli firm,  Elbit Systems , with headquarters in Haifa, a $40million contract to help it spy on citizens’ computers and Internet communications under the guise of intelligence gathering and national security. Elbit announced the contract award Wednesday in a  global press release  but was silent on the Nigerian destination of the contract. Its general manager, Yehuda Vered, opaquely announced that “Elbit Systems will supply its Wise Intelligence Technology (WiT) system to an unnamed country in Africa under a new $40 million contract announc

The Nite Mourinho Mour

Image
It was a night Jose Mourinho, coach of Real Madrid will not forget in a hurry: being walloped by Borussia Dortmund, not 1-0, but 4-1, all the goals coming from Borussia’s Poland danger man Robert Lewandowski. The Poland striker scored in the eighth, 50th, 55th and 66th minute with a blasted penalty to leave an all-German final likely after Barcelona were humbled 4-0 by Bayern Munich on Tuesday. “How did it go from 1-1 to 4-1, I really don’t know. We lost easy possession and we couldn’t cope with their counter-attacking. Many of the boys didn’t perform,” Mourinho added before a flash of defiance, in Obamasque. “We can (turn the tie around), it is of course very difficult but we can. In a crazy night where everyone performs at a high level. Of course we can,” he said. Is that what he was telling Juergen Klopp here?

Lauryn Hill: I'm No Squatter

Image
Singer denies skipping out on her rent. Lauryn Hill 's landlord might want to think twice about  trying to kick her out . Reportedly, in an eviction lawsuit, the landlord claims the singer hasn't paid rent for her South Orange, New Jersey, home for a month; and she's denying in a very public, territorial way. Hill apparently retorted via  Tumblr . "I'd like to set the record straight: I am not squatting, and I do not owe any money to my landlord," she wrote. "I have always stayed current on rent. I was raised in South Orange, which is why these allegations are not only false, but insulting." Taking further shots, this time at the media, the ex- Fugee   explained that she's in the process of working out an "issue" with her home that has nothing to do with not paying rent. "I am in talks with the town about resolving an unrelated issue, regarding how I use my home to work on my music, which has nothing to do with

Senate Opens Debate to Rename UNILAG Moshood Abiola University - This Day

Barring any last minute hitches, the Senate will today commence the debate on the amendment of the University of Lagos Act, which provides for the establishment of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), to pave the way for the change of name of the institution to Moshood Abiola University, Lagos (MAULAG). During the last Democracy Day celebration on May 29, President Goodluck Jonathan announced the decision of the federal government to rename UNILAG after the acclaimed winner of the June 12 1993 presidential election, the late MKO Abiola. However, the decision turned to be controversial with the students, academic faculties and alumni of the institution rejecting the change of name. It soon became the subject of litigation, as the alumni association of the institution filed a suit against the name change ahead of Jonathan’s submission of an amendment bill to the National Assembly. Irrespective, the president still sent the bill to the legislature to jumpstart the process for the chang

Bayern boss Barcelona in Champ league semi first leg

Image
German Bundesliga champion, Bayern Munich have walloped Barcelona 4-0, in the first leg of the Champions League semi final in Munich, with goals from Thomas Muller, Arjen Robben and Mario Gomez. Muller had a brace. The victory appears to have placed Bayern in a pole position for their second successive Champions League final. Bayern’s four-goal thrashing of the Spanish club was Barcelona’s first defeat by a four-goal margin since Getafe beat them in a Spanish Cup semi-final tie in 2007. Barcelona – who are appearing in a record sixth consecutive semi-final – host Bayern in the second leg on May 1. Barcelona had lost the first leg tie in the quarter-final against AC Milan by a two goal margin, but they overturned it in the second leg at home. Next week’s return match will therefore be a mouth-watering, rivetting affair between Bayern and Barcelona. For Bayern, the stunning performance came at the end of a remarkable day even by Bayern’s standards. First they announced th

Etisalat Promo Man ‘Saka’ Now Reppin MTN After He Gets =N=20 Million

Image
MTN has kicked off their television commercial for the recently activated Number Portability Scheme with Saka gladly announcing he has ‘upgraded’ to MTN. Saka seems to have changed camps and pitched his tent with rival company, telecoms giant MTN. A new MTN ad campaign tells us so. The ad starts with Saka dressed in green traditional attire only to transform into a bright yellow attire as he leads a music band. ‘I don port o, I don port go MTN. I don upgrade to MTN‘, he sings and dances. Advertising doesn’t get more brutal than this, picture a popular face of a big brand, announcing to millions of consumers that he’s switching camps and advising them to do so too! Saka, sources say, got paid a mouth watering N20m. Who would resist the offer? Many questions however trail the move; didn’t Saka have an exclusive contract with Etisalat or was he being paid per campaign Culled: www.informationng.com

How Djokovic ended Nadal’s reign in Monte Carlo

Image
A shout of triumph by Djokovic. AFP photo MONTE-CARLO, Monaco (AFP) – Novak Djokovic ended Rafael Nadal’s dreams of a record ninth successive Monte Carlo Masters title with a 6-2, 7-6 (7/1) victory in the final on Sunday. The world number one had been a doubtful starter this week with an injured ankle but played through the pain to lift his first trophy in the principality, the 37th of his career and 14th at the Masters 1000 level. It was also a huge psychological boost ahead of next month’s French Open where Nadal is a record seven-time champion. Nadal had reigned supreme at the Monte Carlo Country Club since his last loss in 2003, when he was still a teenager, and had won every edition since 2005. Djokovic, who achieved the win in one hour, 51 minutes, was overwhelmed. “I cannot be happier than I am in this moment knowing what I’ve been through the whole week, actually two weeks, right after the Davis Cup, trying to recover and make a decision to play or no

Tony Blair to Jonathan: Provide security for Nigerians!….Vanguard

Image
The insecurity challenge facing the nation echoed in Lagos yesterday when former British Prime Minister Tony Blair told President Goodluck to provide security for Nigerians. Blair also asked the Nigerian government to put opportunities in the hands of the masses. But Jonathan said that there is hope for the country notwithstanding the challenges of the transformation programme of his administration. Blair and Jonathan spoke at the opening ceremony of the Rock Cathedral Metropolitan Church of Christ, Lagos. “There is need for safety and security of the people,”the former British prime minister said. According to him, “the society flourishes when the people feel a sense of  freedom, when they feel free and have sense of security.” In apparent reference to the transformation agenda of the Federal Government, Blair said: “For total and stable national transformation to take place in any country, there is need for the people to be happy and the need for government to provide adequat
