Asari Dokubo Released, Flown To Abuja

The leader of the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force, Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, who was   arrested  yesterday in Cotonou, Benin Republic has been released. Mr.  Dokubo was released after President Goodluck Jonathan personally intervened on his behalf with the Beninoise President Yayi Boni. Festus Keyamo, a civil rights activist and personal attorney to Mr. Dokubo confirmed his release to Saharareporters. Dokubo, who once bragged openly that his arrest will lead to the demise of Nigeria spent 36 hours with the Beninoise gendarmes before his release around 1 AM Nigerian time today. President Jonathan reportedly deployed a jet to ferry Mr. Asari to Abuja a few hours after his release. Source: Sahara Reporters.

CBN to dumps polymer for paper notes in 2014

CBN Governor, Lamido Sanusi The Central Bank of Nigeria has said it will  start printing the naira in paper notes in 2014. It signed a deal in 2006 with Australia’s Securency International to print lower more-circulated units of the naira in polymer, while higher denominations were kept in paper form. But six years after and following allegations that the manufacturer had bribed foreign officials to secure contracts, including in Nigeria, the CBN said it was being forced to reverse the policy.

Fake/Lies: Alleged assassination attempt on Oduah,

The  alleged assassination attempt on Nigeria’s embattled Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, is a manufactured lie meant to divert attention from the corruption scandal involving her, Nigerians said on Tuesday. The minister had, on Monday evening, reported to the police that her car came under gunfire by unknown persons at Maitama area of Abuja on Friday at 10.30 p.m. But Nigerians, who spoke on the alleged assassination attempt doubted the story, describing it as “cooked up” and an attempt to divert attention from the scandal involving her in the purchase of two BMW cars at the hefty sum of N255 million.

Godogodo: How I quit, returned to robbery in 2011

Abiodun Ogunjobi, otherwise known as  Godogodo,  the dreaded one-eyed robbery czar who terrorized Lagos and other South-West states, killing no less than 50 policemen while raiding several  banks, businesses and homes, for over 14 years  has revealed that he almost quit robbery in 2011. Godogodo made this disclosure during an interview with  Vanguard  at the state Police Command headquarters, Ikeja, where he is currently being detained following his arrest by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, led by SP Abba Kyari, on August He told  Vanguard  that he had planned to quit robbery after building two houses and setting up 50 fishponds, valued at about N16 million, in Ikorodu area of Lagos. Godogodo added that he also travelled to Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, to buy clothes whose sales would keep him busy when he is not on his fish farm.

Breaking News: New PDP has merged with APC

Seven PDP governors who have been at political loggerheads with the leadership of Nigeria’s ruling party and President Goodluck Jonathan today finally dumped the party and joined the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC. The announcement was made today at the Kano State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro Abuja, the Nigerian capital, at a ceremony attended by all the seven governors and leaders of the APC.

PHOTO: Ayodele Efunla Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has vowed to arrest and prosecute Mr. Michael Ekundayo, an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, caught on video collecting N8,000 bribe from a motorist and is now on the run. The governor also banned children and others from skating on the highways, saying that anyone caught violating the order would be arrested and prosecuted according to the dictates of the law.

A herbalist, Ifatade Elegbeleye has been arrested and charged before an Ojokoro Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, western Nigeria for allegedly defrauding a woman seeking husband. He allegedly swindled her of N2m and raped her at his shrine. The 31-year old businesswoman, Temidayo Akinwale, who is now pregnant, suffered the fate when she contacted the herbalist to deliver her from strange spirits that prevented her from getting a husband.

Estate agent bags 15 year sentence for fraud

A Nigerian High Court in Ikeja, capital of Lagos state on Monday sentenced an estate agent, Michael Olabameji, to 15 years imprisonment for defrauding 100 accommodation seekers of N29.8 million. Justice Adeniyi Onigbanjo convicted Olabameji, 42, of the 99-count charge of obtaining money by false pretence preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Onigbanjo sentenced the convict to 15 years imprisonment on each count, which is to run concurrently beginning from Feb.1, 2010, when he was remanded in prison.

Former ASUU president Festus Iyayi killed in fatal crash today

Former President of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Dr. Festus Iyayi, was killed this afternoon in a fatal auto accident in Lokoja, on his way to Kano state for a meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU where the union is expected to call off its four month old strike. It's being reported that the convoy of the Governor of Kogi State, Mr. Idris Wada, rammed into the vehicle conveying Professor Iyayi and some members of the union to Kano. The university don who is also a popular writer, died on the scene while two other occupants of the vehicle were injured.

Lagos State: Govt Restricts Danfo Drivers To 8 Hrs Of Work

The Lagos State Government says it would begin enforcement of a section of the road traffic law which restricts commuter bus drivers from driving for more than eight hours at a stretch daily. Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa disclosed this at the weekend at a news conference heralding the National Council on Transportation conference which kicked off today and would end on Friday at the Lagos City Hall, Lagos, southwest Nigeria. According to Opeifa, section 44 of the Road Traffic Law bars commuter bus drivers from driving  for eight hours at a stretch, saying that government would begin enforcement of the new law in January 2014.

The Argentina forward was forced off after less than half-an-hour of Sunday's match against Real Betis after pulling up with a muscle problem in his left leg. The Spanish club announced the news via its Twitter feed on Monday following scans. Messi will miss his country's forthcoming friendlies with Ecuador and Bosnia and Herzegovina because of the problem.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday announced a cash gift of N2m each for all the players of the nation’s Under-17 team, the Golden Eaglets, who won the 2013 FIFA Under-17 World Soccer Championship on Friday in Abu Dhabi, United Emirates. The players, their handlers and key members of the Nigerian Supporters’ Club, according to the President, will also be honoured with national honours during the next award ceremony.

ASUU set to suspend strike this week

ASUU president, Fagge According to Punch NG  Indications have emerged that the Academic Staff Union of Universities may call off the over four-month-old strike on Thursday. Barring a last-minute change, the National Executive Committee of ASUU will meet on Wednesday night to consider the position of the congresses of the over 50 public universities on the offer made by the Federal government to revamp the institutions. The  union met with  a Federal Government team led by President Goodluck Jonathan last Tuesday in Abuja.

© Getty Images Nigeria  became the most successful team in FIFA U-17 World Cup history with a 3-0 win over holders Mexico  at the Mohammad Bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. The final was a rematch of the 6-1 win Nigeria  inflicted on the Mexicans in Group F play and sees the Golden Eaglets lay hands on the junior world trophy for the fourth time in their history, one better than South American giants Brazil. When the final whistle went in the UAE capital, fans and players alike rejoiced, fingers pointed to the sky, with what has become the traditional Nigerian celebration of: “yes, yes yes!”
