FG declares Monday and Tuesday next week public holidays

To commemorate the Eid-el-fitri Salah celebration, the Federal Government has declared Monday July 28th and Tuesday July 29th public holidays. A statement issued yesterday July 23rd in Abuja by the Ministry of Interior on behalf of the Federal government, enjoined all Muslim faithful and Nigerians in general to extend the spiritual benefits of Ramadan, which are love, peace, justice to their daily living.

FRSC to enforce new drivers’ licence, number plate, Aug. 1

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Tuesday said it would begin enforcement of the new drivers’ licence and number plate on 1 August. The Lagos State Sector Commander, Chidi Nkwonta, told NAN that the decision followed the new court judgment. “This new judgment made it very clear that as from Aug. 1, FRSC should impound. “So, Nigerians must discountenance that first misleading judgment and take this one because we are going to continue enforcement as from 1 August 2014.

NLC criticises lack of dignity for women in banking sector

Ms Olubunmi Abikoye, the Chairperson, Lagos State Women’s Wing of the Nigeria Labour Congress, on Tuesday said the banking sector was denying women their right to dignity and marriage. Abikoye told NAN that the violation contravened the 1999 Nigeria Constitution which promotes dignity of human beings. “When you seek an employment in the banking sector bank now, the first thing is – how old are you? You tell them your age; the next thing is: Are you single? “Then, you are going to sign an undertaking that in the next three years, you will not get married, talk less of having baby. Why?,” she asked. “Is that how banking industry has been run in those days? What has befallen on us? Today is Nelson Mandela International Day, a day of service celebrated on July 18, Mandela's birthday. Mandela, the forme r president of South Africa and Nobel Peace Price recipient, died at 95 on Dec. 5, 2013 and this is the first time the day has been celebrated since his death. More than 100 countries worldwide are set to join South Africa today in its commemoration of Nelson Mandela International Day. This year will mark the first time the day has been celebrated without Madiba, and the 5th year since the UN declared July 18 – the birthday of the anti-apartheid revolutionary – the international day aimed at "bringing people together to fight poverty and promote peace and reconciliation."

Pres. Jonathan nominates FRSC boss as minister, to replace Stella Oduah

President Jonathan has nominated the current boss of the Federal Road Safety Commission FRSC, 43 year old Ositadinma Benjamin Chidoka as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to represent Anambra in the Federal Executive council. According to reports, Chidoka is most likely to replace former Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah who resigned her position in February. A letter of his nomination has been sent to the Nigerian Senate and would be read on the floor of the Senate today. Abubakar Olanrewaju from Kwara state was also nominated and would replace former Sports minister, Bolaji Abdullahi, in the Federal Executive Council if confirmed by the senate.

World Cup resumes

The World Cup resumes after a 48 hour lull in hostilities on Friday with two blockbuster quarter-finals, as France take on old rivals Germany and hosts Brazil clash with Colombia. France and Germany get the last eight ball rolling at 1600 GMT at Rio de Janeiro’s mythic Maracana stadium, a fitting backdrop for these two European titans. Then up the coast in Fortaleza, at 2000 GMT, Brazil’s talismanic poster boy Neymar comes up against Colombia’s James Rodriguez, the Monaco playmaker who tops the World Cup scoring chart with five goals. Brazil’s build-up has been dominated by ‘cry baby’ headlines over the cascade of tears from the players at the nervy last 16 penalty defeat of Chile last Saturday.

Soldiers set BRT buses on fire on Ikorodu Road

Soldiers have been on a rampage for hours now after one of their own was crushed by a BRT bus this morning. Aside from beating people up mercilessly, BRT buses have been set on fire..and this is close to a filling station. But is this how to resolve the issue? Is this not too much?
