Why we asked schools to open September 22 – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan has explained why the Federal Government directed schools to re-open on Monday, September 22 despite some pockets of protests by some individuals and teachers over the outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease in the country.

He said government took the decision to avoid discrimination against Nigeria within the international community and also to tell the world that the country has successfully managed Ebola.

President Jonathan spoke in Abuja on Thursday at the meeting of the National Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party.

He lamented that the late Patrick Sawyer brought the disease to Nigeria from Liberia.

President Jonathan said that the position of the country within the international community made the world to immediately be aware of the disease in the country.

He said he was happy that at the moment, there was no one suffering from the virus, saying that out of the 19 people that contacted Ebola, seven had died while the rest survived.

He attributed the success to the commitment of Nigerians and government in fighting the scourge.

The President said, “There is nobody with Ebola again in Nigeria, even though there are those we are watching. There are chances that other people could bring the disease to the country as long as we are on the West coast, but we shall handle it.”
